When we got the car, it had the usual bodge to mount a stereo to the underside of the dashboard. There were an interesting variety of holes in the metal lip; and they were all twisted, showing how much stress the weight of the stereo had put on the dash.
We decided there should be a better way of doing it, and set about a solution. If you look under the dash there is a lot of stuff there. A lot is plastic, and most is essential so you can't mess around with it. However, there are 2 solid metal things to help: the steering column, and the glovebox bracing stay.
We came up with a mounting bracket that has a standard letterbox opening at the front, to take the stereo. The rear of the holder has a horizontal aluminium L-section strut running across it which fixes to the steering column at one end, and to the glove box stay at the other. This fully supports the weight of the stereo and stops it bending the dashboard.

Very work in progress.
